LA Locals Love: Olvera Street

Olvera Street Entrance - Life in Wanderlust

I'm so excited to be sharing yet another "LA Locals Love" post, a place where I share all things Los Angeles. Looking for things to do in LA? You can find awesome places on my LA Locals Love section of the blog.

Today I'm introducing Olvera Street (nope, it's not "Olivera" Street!) in downtown Los Angeles!

Olvera Street Los Angeles - Life in Wanderlust

What is Olvera Street?

Olvera Street is said to be one of the 'original' streets of Los Angeles. It's a historic district in downtown Los Angeles and a part of the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument and a major tourist spot for visitors and almost always part of any Los Angeles tours. Olvera Street is currently home to over 30 vendors, ranging from restaurants to colorful shops full of bright and colorful souvenirs. I actually live very close to Olvera Street and let me tell you, it's busy every single day. Obviously weekends are much busier with visitors but it's a fun place to visit all year long!

Where is Olvera Street?

Olvera Street is located in downtown Los Angeles. It's conveniently located across the street from Union Station so I recommend taking the metro (subway) or any sort of public transportation to save money on parking! If you're driving, there are 5 parking lots surrounding Olvera Street. You can click here to see where they're located.

What can you find on Olvera Street?

There's over 30 vendors on and around Olvera Street. There's restaurants, food carts, clothing, accessories and so much more. You just may come out with a taco in one hand and a beautiful hand-sewn leather bag in the other!

Featured Friends: Michelle from The Wandering Queen

I'm so thrilled to introduce everyone to Michelle from The Wandering Queen for May's Featured Friend! Michelle has recently joined the Fly Away Friday community and when she reached out about becoming my next Featured Friend, I was so flattered. Michelle is a Texas native, a full time Engineer by day and Travel Blogger/Photographer by night and weekend. You'll see for yourself in a second but her photos are absolutely breathtaking. Especially if you're an outdoorsy person, Michelle is your gal! Trust me, I'm not much of an outdoorsy person but she's inspiring me to become one just from her photos.

Without further ado, get to know Michelle from The Wandering Queen!

Checking In: The Saguaro Palm Springs, California

The Saguaro Palm Springs Hotel Review

I'm banking on the fact that you've seen at least someone post a photo of The Saguaro Palm Springs on your Instagram feed. Was I right? I thought so. The Saguaro Palm Springs in the past few years has become one of the most popular places to stay in the SoCal area but most importantly, to photograph. The ridiculously bright colors makes for the perfect photo, practically any place you photograph at the Saguaro!

I've personally stayed at the Saguaro Palm Springs a couple of times but never written up a "Checking In" series for it. Since my brother and I stayed there last month, I thought it would be a great opportunity to share what staying at the Saguaro Palm Springs is really like, not just pretty wall photos!

Things To Do, Where to Eat and Where to Stay in Auckland New Zealand

Things to Do in Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland, New Zealand now ranks high on my list of favorite cities. It reminds me of something between Seattle, Washington and San Diego, California which I both adore! We were there for 3 nights and 4 days total which felt way too short but we sure did get a lot done (more like ate a lot). So if you're looking for things to do or where to eat in Auckland, keep reading!

Featured Friends: Melina from Coffee Fernweh

Coffee Fernweh Featured Interview on Life in Wanderlust

Featured Friends is one of the best decisions I've ever made for Life in Wanderlust. You've heard me rave about it before but every time I have a guest, it makes me so happy! I love getting to know my fellow Travel Bloggers and totally honored to have them on my blog.

Anyway, meet my April Featured Friend, Melina from Coffee Fernweh! She's been a loyal Fly Away Friday participant for a while now and I've loved following along on all of her channels as she travels near and far featuring one of my favorite things ever: coffee! As her brand Coffee Fernweh would suggest, she's an expert in the subject of coffee and I love that she includes this aspect to her content. Without further ado, let's start the interview!

Experiencing the Hobbiton Movie Set & Hobbiton Banquet Tour

Hobbiton Movie Set Tour New Zealand

Ever since the Hobbiton Movie Set opened, I've wanted to visit. While I've read all the Lord of the Rings books and watched all of the movies, I still wasn't a huge fan. That didn't matter though, the Hobbiton Movie Set in New Zealand looks absolutely charming and I just had to go! When New Zealand was confirmed as one of our honeymoon destinations, the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour was the first thing that was booked. We were both so excited to check out the movie set that we've heard so much about. Since it was our honeymoon, we decided to go for the Hobbiton Banquet Tour which included the tour of course as well as a Hobbit-style banquet feast!

Checking In: Sleeping in an Airplane at Woodlyn Park, New Zealand

Woodlyn Park Waitomo Hotel - Airplane & Hobbit Hotel

While I was in New Zealand, one of the most responded-to Instagram Stories was about the airplane hotel that I was staying at. I was so happy to see that so many people were as intrigued by it as I was! Staying overnight in an airplane wasn't on my travel bucket-list until I knew of its existence. I booked the airplane stay at Woodlyn Park almost immediately after we confirmed New Zealand as one of our honeymoon destinations.

But wait! Woodlyn Park in Waitomo offers more than just accommodations in an airplane. There's 3 more fun and unique spaces you can stay in.

Featured Friends: Kat from Bright Lights of America

Introducing my March Featured Friends, Kat from Bright Lights of America! I've known Kat for a while now and she's one of my favorite OG Fly Away Friday and Travel Blogger friend. Kat currently resides in San Francisco and is an expat from Australia. Her travel content is based around expat life and she shares fantastic expat advice and tips for people that may be interested. Even though I moved from life in Tokyo to the United States, I'm technically not an expat because I'm dual-citizen, so I've always been interested in the expat journey.

I absolutely loved reading her answers and getting to know Kat more. She's a lovely person, an excellent writer and a content creator in general. I personally guarantee that you're going to enjoy her content so make sure you visit her over on her blog. Now without further ado, here's Kat!

The Best Place to See Kiwis - Kiwi House in Otorohanga New Zealand

Kiwi House New Zealand Best Place To See Kiwis

When I was growing up in an International School in Tokyo, one of my best friends was from New Zealand. Her room was adorned with kiwis; stuffed animals, posters, bed sheets and more. Because of its obvious cuteness, I was obsessed with them and to this day, one of the goals I had of visiting New Zealand was to see a kiwi in real life. So naturally, I had to Google the best place to see kiwis in New Zealand!

While I had heard that the Auckland Zoo would have kiwis, I luckily came across the Otorohanga Kiwi House & Native Bird Park online as I was researching the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. It’s not too far away from the caves so it was perfect! Not only that, I loved that the Kiwi House is a non-profit conservatory where they rescue, foster and treat native birds that need help.

Mesmerized by the Glowworms at Waitomo Caves in New Zealand

Waitomo Caves Review

One of the most highly recommended activities in the North Island of New Zealand aside from The Hobbiton Movie Set Tour (post coming soon!) was the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. As you may assume from the name of it, yes, it’s a cave full of glowworms. If you’re looking for things to do in New Zealand, I highly recommend it!

A quick disclosure if you're wondering why I only have outdoor photos and credited photos, it's because there's absolutely no photography allowed in the caves. In fact, I saw someone getting walked out because they were trying to be sneaky and get a photo with their phone!

10 Awesome Podcasts I Listen To While I Travel

As much as I love listening to music (and singing along to it!), sometimes I want to listen to something else. It's funny, I'm not a huge fan of audiobooks since I like to create the character's voices and tones in my mind but I'll listen to podcasts. Am I the only one that feels that way, or just loves the feel of a book in your hand? Since I travel so much, a lot of people ask me what I do, "other than listen to music or read books" and my answer? Podcasts.

I've been listening to podcasts for a few years now and even co-hosted a baseball podcast way before podcasts were cool. Of course if you've been following along for a while, I now have my own podcast which we'll get to in a bit! Here's 10 podcasts that I enjoy listening to that aren't necessarily related to travel that you may enjoy!

Featured Friends: Sylvia from Sylvia G Eatery

Sylvia G Eatery Interview - Life in Wanderlust

Sylvia from Sylvia G Eatery is my very first Featured Friend of 2018 and I couldn't be happier about it. I was looking through my Instagram notification feed and saw that she was following along, so I went to her page and was instantly hooked! I've probably watched all of her YouTube videos at this point and her Instagram feed is #goals. She's a foodie, photographer and YouTuber that you're going to want to get to know!

Top 10 Amazon Travel Products You Need

10 Best Amazon Travel Products

I'm most definitely a typical Millennial in that I order everything from Amazon. Or is that everyone? Well either way, we all know you can pretty much find everything you need in life from Amazon whether it's dog poop bags, bar stools or Trump wigs. I'm especially a big fan of Amazon's own line, AmazonBasics. It's cheap, great quality and ships immediately.

Of course as a Travel Blogger, I've done my fair share of trying out travel accessories from Amazon. Some of them were a huge waste of money but these 10 items have changed my travel life for the better. I was inspired by all the "Amazon Must Buys" Youtube videos and decided to share my tried and true Amazon travel products with you!

Checking In: Marriott Portland Downtown Waterfront

Marriott Downtown Portland Waterfront Review
The Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront graciously offered me a special rate for this stay. However, all opinions are as always, my own.

Want to know a funny fact about the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront to start off this post? Well, when I was trying to get into the hospitality business after getting tired of high fashion retail, I applied to this hotel a couple of times. I got rejected....multiple times, ha! It's ok though and absolutely no hard feelings! I was hired by the Marriott down the street by the water and ended up having a great relationship with the sales team at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront.

If you couldn't figure it out from that or you don't know much about me, I used to live in Portland for about 4 years total. I love the city and when I moved to Los Angeles, I left a fabulous city and a ton of my close friends up there. So naturally, I visit Portland 1-2 times a year. This isn't the first time I've stayed at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront nor is it the first time I've written about them! But it is the first time I've dedicated a post to them on my Checking In series. Why? Because it's worth trying to convince you to stay there!

Drink & Craft at the DIY Bar in Portland, Oregon

DIY Bar Portland Oregon Review

As I was planning our Portland trip, I scrolled through my personal Instagram to check out what my Portland friends have been up to (if you didn't know, I lived there for 4 years!) and if there were any interesting restaurants or activities I can try out. Turns out my Portland friends are so reliable and they don't even know it!

One of my coworkers had a photo of her and her friends with beers in one hand and unique leather crafts in the other, so I had to see what this was all about. On her geotag, it said DIY Bar Portland. Yes! I saw DIY Bar Portland on Buzzfeed's Bring Me and thought about going a while back. This was the perfect activity for our group; they all love Portland craft beer and not exactly the wine-paint-night type.

LA Locals Love: Madame Tussauds Hollywood

Madame Tussauds Hollywood Review Spiderman

When my family was in town for my wedding, we spent a week being complete tourists of Los Angeles and it was so much fun! Of course when you’re being tourists in Los Angeles, Hollywood is a must. We walked up and down Hollywood Boulevard all afternoon and it reminded me of a very popular post by my contributor, Wendy wrote: 5 Things You Must Do In Hollywood. Take a read if you’re headed out here!

Originally, we were interested in visiting Madame Tusseauds Hollywood but were turned off after seeing the high prices. It was meant to be though, because as we were walking around, some guy handed us buy 1 get 1 free coupons! Score! If you’re looking for things to do in Hollywood, Madame Tussauds should be on your list.

2018 Travel Plans & Personal Resolutions

2018 Travel Plans and New Year Resolutions - Life in Wanderlust

Happy New Year, friends!

2017 was one of the best years of my life if not *the* best. Personally and professionally, I almost have no complaints. Some of my highlights are:

  • I got married and had the most seamless wedding full of love and our favorite people.
  • I started a new job that I absolutely love.
  • Life in Wanderlust grew tremendously and worked with incredible brands like Toyota, Suja, United HealthCare, Carnival Cruises, Coca Cola & more!
  • I traveled to tons of new places and back to familiar spots.
  • We welcomed a Corgi puppy into our little family.
  • One of the happiest years ever!
